Pt. 2 - 4 Important Key Themes To Inclusionary Leadership

Last week we began sharing 4 important key themes to inclusionary leadership as described by Ray Arata, the founder of the Better Man Conference , co-founder of the Gender Leadership Group, and the author of Wake Up, Man Up, Step Up. 

Theme 1 is, "We can choose possibility over pain" and Theme 2 is, "Partnership of the head and heart, in order to make what is possible, real."  This week he shares both Theme 3  and Theme 4.

Ray:

Conscious partnership of the head and heart (Theme 2) allows us to fully embrace the third theme.

THEME 3: WE ARE ALL BETTER TOGETHER, THAN WE ARE APART

Now we all know that relationships are mandatory for success, and by definition, relationship means we can’t do this alone.  Being an ally isn’t something we can do alone.  So let’s remember this today as we embark on our journey...together.

THEME 4: WE ALL WANT THE SAME THING

Now the fourth and final theme is really a reminder, it’s something that’s true for most of us, yet it’s unlikely, at least that is what I make up, that most of us think about this in a business environment and that is, "we all want the same thing."  So what do I mean by that?

One of the things I have experienced in my work is how big a role our family of origin and what we experience when we are young still rings true.  So I’d like to advance, that when we were young, at the most basic level, what we wanted and needed most besides food and water, was to be seen and heard.  We may not have known how to ask for it, at least I didn’t, and we may have resorted to what I like to call “unique methods” to get what we want and we sought the attention, nonetheless.  And many of us didn’t get it the way we needed it and that is just part of the human condition.  And that’s not something we’re trying to solve today.

Now when we enter into adult relationships, most of us once again seek to be with another that sees us, appreciates us, hears us, respects us and values us for who we are.

With a show of hands how many people can identify with what I just said?

(Many in audience raises their hand)

I am kinda setting you up,, I just giving you a heads up.

SO TO ME AT THE MOST BASIC LEVEL, AT THE HUMAN LEVEL, AT THE HEART LEVEL, THE SAME THING WE ALL WANT IS LOVE.

So I don’t think it’s a stretch that as adults in the workplace, where we spend so much time at work that we want to be seen, heard, valued, respected, appreciated for who we are.  So to me at the most basic level, at the human level, at the heart level, the same thing we all want is love.

For you, the word might be caring, connection, appreciation, your choice.  And today is all about conscious choice.  a choice to grow, a choice to be vulnerable, a choice to be a better man, a better woman, a better person, a better leader, a better ally.  So is everyone ready to get started?

(Crowd applauses)

I think I’m getting it.  Ok, better man, I get to be a better man.  It’s like sensitivity, vulnerability, curiosity, there’s all that stuff going on and I think I heard Ray say that most of you are being paid to be here.  Probably more than I am getting paid.  So I'm not going to try so hard, and that’s just being honest.  That’s how I really feel, I am a little jealous.  I feel bad that I don’t have a job anymore.  I’m old and shit.  But I am going to go on because I am brave and I can stand these emotions, they’re ok with me.  I can face them.  Son’s of bitches. 

(Crowd giggles and laughs) 

Sorry!  We have a panel to get started this morning.  It’s a showcase of personal stories from four viewpoints of what it means to be part of a non-dominant group in a homogeneous workplace.  

There’s going to be a bunch of funny phrases today I am sure.  

This empathetic journey will provide context around everyday micro aggression, covering a fallacy that there is any one person that can live as a modeler......(Transcript and video of this panel will be delivered in an upcoming blog)
